Career life of Ryan Kavanaugh
After briefly working as a consultant to other small businesses and venture capitalists, Kavanaugh founded Relativity Media. He asked his father for a loan of $50,000 to start his hedge fund in the late 1990s; his father declined, but this did not deter Ryan, whose goal was to use mathematical tools to connect financing and movie projects in a more efficient manner than traditional Hollywood finance. Kavanaugh has acquired several assets, including John Malone’s Liberty Media/Starz film unit Overture Films’ marketing and distribution operations, as well as a first-of-its-kind TV pay deal with Netflix.
Kavanaugh formed a marketing, promotional, and production partnership with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Mobile and Virgin Produced, both owned by Relativity. Kavanaugh also negotiated a cross-platform marketing alliance with Clear Channel Radio. He was also instrumental in launching Relativity’s collaboration with China’s Huaxia Film Distribution Co.
